Getting Started
Follow these steps to set up your first budget and start logging spending.
-
Download & complete onboarding
Install Money Melon from the App Store, then walk through onboarding: choose categories, enter income, set budget preferences, and review your suggested budget.
-
Assign income to categories
When you receive income, it appears in Ready to Assign. Tap categories to assign money until Ready to Assign reaches zero — every dollar gets a job.
-
Log spending as you go
Tap the add button, pick a category, enter the amount, and save. Use widgets or Apple Watch for even faster logging.
Tips
Log as you spend
Record transactions right after a purchase so category balances stay accurate throughout the day.
Move money when plans change
Life happens — re-assign between categories anytime via Settings → Move money. Budgets are flexible, not fragile.
Review Insights weekly
Check the Insights tab each week to spot overspending early and adjust your plan before the period ends.
FAQ — Budgeting
What is Ready to Assign?
Ready to Assign is the pool of unassigned income at the top of your budget. When you log income, it lands here first. Assign it to your categories until Ready to Assign reaches zero — that's zero-based budgeting in action.
How do I move money between categories?
Go to Settings → Move money, choose a source category and destination, enter the amount, and confirm. Use this whenever your priorities shift mid-period.
What happens at the end of a budget period?
When a new budget period begins, your category assignments carry forward. If you overspent a category, the negative balance rolls over so you can see what you still owe that envelope.
Monthly vs weekly vs bi-weekly budget periods
Choose the period that matches your pay cycle during onboarding or in Settings. Money Melon adjusts period boundaries and income prompts accordingly — weekly for weekly pay, bi-weekly for every-two-weeks pay, and monthly for salaried or monthly planning.
FAQ — Features
Goals — save up, pay off debt, spending caps
Create goals from the Goals tab to track savings targets, debt payoff, or spending limits. Assign money to a goal category and watch progress over time. Move funds between goals and regular categories as your priorities change.
Net worth tracking
Track property, vehicles, valuables, and debts manually in the Insights tab. Money Melon does not connect to banks — you enter and update values yourself for a complete financial picture.
Recurring transactions vs transaction templates
Recurring transactions automatically create entries on a schedule (e.g. rent every month). Transaction templates are saved presets you tap to fill in quickly — they don't post on their own. Use recurring for bills; use templates for frequent one-off purchases.
Insights tab — what it shows
The Insights tab shows spending trends, category breakdown charts, transaction history, and net worth over time. Use it to understand where your money went and spot patterns across budget periods.
Reminders
Set local notification reminders in Settings to log spending or review your budget. Reminders are scheduled on your device — Money Melon never receives the content of your budget.
App lock & Hide amounts
Enable App lock in Settings to require Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode when opening Money Melon. Turn on Hide amounts to blur dollar values on screen — useful in shared spaces or screenshots.
FAQ — Data & backup
JSON backup/restore vs CSV export vs monthly PDF — when to use each
JSON backup/restore — Full snapshot of your budget for device changes or disaster recovery. Use before switching phones.
CSV export — Spreadsheet-friendly export for analysis, taxes, or custom reports.
Monthly PDF — A formatted summary you can save or share. Best for records and printing.
iCloud sync — how to enable, what syncs, requirements
Turn on iCloud sync in Settings. Your categories, transactions, and budget state sync through your personal iCloud account. You need iOS 18.0+, an iCloud account signed in on your device, and iCloud Drive enabled. We don't operate servers — sync goes through Apple.
iCloud conflict — keep device vs use iCloud copy
If you edit on two devices before they sync, Money Melon detects the conflict and asks you to keep this device or use the iCloud copy. Choose the version you want to keep; the other is replaced. Sync regularly to avoid conflicts.
Moving to a new iPhone
Before switching: export a JSON backup or ensure iCloud sync is on and fully synced. On your new iPhone, install Money Melon, sign into the same iCloud account, and enable iCloud sync — or restore from your JSON backup in Settings → Backup & Restore.
FAQ — Widgets & Watch
Today's Spending widget (small)
The small widget shows how much you've spent today across all categories. Add it from the iOS widget gallery and place it on your Home Screen or Lock Screen for a quick daily glance.
Quick Log widget (medium, configurable)
The medium Quick Log widget lets you log a transaction in one tap. Configure which category and amount preset appear in Settings → Widgets. Ideal for your most frequent purchases.
Apple Watch quick-log
Log spending from your Apple Watch with the Money Melon watch app. Set up categories and sync on your iPhone first — the watch relies on your phone's budget data.
Widget shows "Setup" until onboarding complete
Widgets display a "Setup" placeholder until you finish onboarding on your iPhone. Complete the setup flow (categories, income, budget preferences), then widgets will show live data.
FAQ — Privacy & security
Is my data private?
Yes. Money Melon is local-first — your budget lives on your device. We don't operate servers that collect your transactions, use analytics SDKs, or connect to banks. Optional iCloud sync stores data in your personal iCloud account under Apple's privacy terms. Read our full Privacy Policy.
Do I need a bank account?
No. Money Melon is fully manual — you enter income and log spending yourself. No bank connection, login, or financial institution link required.
Troubleshooting
Data not syncing between devices
Check that iCloud sync is enabled on both devices, you're signed into the same iCloud account, and iCloud Drive is on. Open Money Melon on each device while connected to the internet and wait a moment for sync. If issues persist, force-quit and reopen the app.
How to restore from backup
Go to Settings → Backup & Restore → Restore and select your JSON backup file. Restoring replaces your current budget with the backup contents — export a fresh backup first if you want to keep today's data.
How to reset all data (local + iCloud)
Go to Settings → Reset all data. This permanently erases categories, transactions, and onboarding state, turns off iCloud sync, and removes Money Melon's data from your iCloud container. This cannot be undone — back up first if needed.
Demo data — load/remove
Try Money Melon with sample data from Settings → Demo data. Load demo data to explore features without entering real numbers. Remove it anytime to return to your own budget or start fresh.
System requirements
- iOS 18.0 or later
- iCloud account (optional) — required only for iCloud sync across devices
- Supported languages: English, German, Spanish, French
